Bio sonar

Dolphins (as well as bats) are equipped with an astonishingly well developed biosonar system. With this sonar the dolphins are able to probe their underwater environment very efficiently even in the dark. The dolphins produce so called clicks in the nasal sac system. The emitted sound is reflected by the target and is recorded by the dolphin as an echo.

The clicks that are repeated 20 to 30 times per second, have a duration of about 50 ms and contain frequencies up to 130 kHz.
